Job Description

In this role, you will be responsible for ...     


  • Assisting the Deputy Director of Welfare Operations (DDWO) and Deputy Director of Welfare (DDW) in the management and implementation of the SPCA’s welfare programmes
  • Supervising ward management, hygiene and patient care including the development and implementation of nursing plans (including administering medication to hospitalised animals and record keeping), collaborating with the welfare veterinary assistants and animal carers in delivery
  • Assisting with the implementation of SPCA’s animal birth control programmes in operation at the time.  
  • Assisting with inventory control, equipment maintenance and dispensing medications (keeping relevant records)
  • To be familiar and able to assist with operating the in-house laboratory and communicate laboratory results to the relevant welfare veterinary surgeon (or other party as required)
  • To provide assistance and support to welfare veterinary surgeons performing surgeries including but not limited to restraining animals for anaesthesia, monitoring anaesthetics and post–op care
  • To assist with the overall supervision of the welfare clinical and animal holding areas in terms of hygiene and management to meet operational needs
  • To assist in communicating with the public
  • On a shared rotation, be on duty out of hours as required, which can include evenings, weekends and public holidays
  • Assist with staff and volunteer training, outreach and field work
  • Be familiar with and follow the Welfare Practice Manual and any relevant standard operational procedures related to job duties
  • To participate when required in S.P.C.A. public events
  • To attend occupational health-safety and fire safety talks etc. and if assigned be prepared to act as a fire marshall
  • To co-operate with all other departments on a daily basis; and any other job-related tasks assigned by superior(s)  


What will you need for this role?  


  • A degree in Veterinary Medicine/Science 
  • A minimum of 4 years practical experience in a clinical setting.
  • Proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  • Good team player with excellent communication and organizational ability.
  • Responsible, systematic and works well under pressure
